Brain Awareness WeekBrain Awareness Week (BAW) is a week long international campaign designed to teach people about the brain, how it works, and why research is so important. The goal is to raise awareness about the nervous system and the progress and benefits of ongoing neuroscience research. The Society for Neuroscience and the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives organize BAW events as part of an international effort to make neuroscience a household word. 2005 - 2006 - 2008 - 2009Brain Awareness Week March 2007:Program will explore ADD/ADHD mysteriesExperts join seminar on ADD/ADHDBrain Awareness Week was a great success last month as over 200 teacher, parents, and healthcare professionals attended a symposium on ADD and ADHD on Mar. 22, 2007 at the Urban Child Institute in Memphis. The UT Neuroscience Institute co-sponsored the symposium with the Urban Child Institute. The symposium was an effort by the Neuroscience Institute to present advances in understanding and treatment of ADD and ADHD.
William E. Armstrong, PhD, director of the Neuroscience Institute and acting chairman of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, moderated the symposium. The featured presentations were by Dr. David Kube, Associate Professor of Developmental Pediatrics at UTHSC, who discussed updates on current diagnosis criteria, behavioral medication and home management, and Dr. Margaret Semrud-Clikeman, Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at Michigan State University, who spoke on the recent advances in understanding the neurological basis for ADD and ADHD using advanced imaging techniques. The symposium was coordinated by Dr. Paul Herron of the Neuroscience Institute, and Ms. Brenda Williams of the Urban Child Institute. Click here to see the poster for this event.
