Research Interests

Mechanisms of ischemic brain injury, recovery, and blood flow regulation are of major interest in this laboratory. Following middle cerebral artery occlusion in the rat, changes in cortical gene expression and electrophysiologic function are correlated to ischemia severity, duration, and histologic outcome. Techniques include cerebral blood flow studies (autoradiographic and Laser Doppler), histopathology, image analysis, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, in situ hybridization, measurement of DC potentials, and pharmacologic intervention. Clinical research includes the detection and quantification of arterial platelet-fibrin microemboli during coronary artery bypass grafting and their relationship to neurologic and neuropsychological outcome.
